What is cupping?

Cupping therapy is a therapeutic technique that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. The cups can be made of various materials, such as glass, bamboo, or silicone. The suction created by the cups draws the skin and underlying tissue into the cup, which is believed to promote blood flow, relaxation, and pain relief. Cupping therapy is used in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as in other cultures around the world. It is often employed for muscle tension, pain management, and to address various health conditions.

What does cupping feel like?

Cupping is generally not painful, but the sensation can vary depending on your sensitivity and the intensity of the suction. Most people describe the feeling as a firm pulling or pressure on the skin rather than actual pain. It can feel unusual if it's your first time, but many find it relaxing, like a deep massage.

What are cupping marks?

As for the cupping marks, it looks more intense than it feels. The marks left by cupping aren’t actually bruises from injury but result from increased blood flow to the area. They’re usually painless, though you might feel slight tenderness where the cups were applied, similar to how you might feel after a strong massage. This tenderness typically fades within a day or two.

Do the marks mean anything?

Yes, cupping marks are thought to reflect the state of your body's circulation and energy flow. The intensity and presence of the marks can indicate areas of stagnation or imbalance.

What is Hijama?

Hijama, also known as wet cupping, is a therapeutic technique rooted in Islamic tradition. It involves the application of cups to specific areas of the body to create suction, drawing out stagnant or "impure" blood. Muslims may consider hijama as a form of Sunnah (Prophetic tradition) and practice it as a means of following the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Hijama is often performed on specific dates recommended in Islamic tradition, such as the 17th, 19th, or 21st of the lunar month. Its aim is not only for physical health benefits but also for spiritual purification and adherence to religious practices.

Is it painful?

During hijama (wet cupping), we use sterile, single-use lancets to make small, superficial cuts on the skin. These lancets are designed to be hygienic and minimize any risk of infection, ensuring the process is safe. They're also very fine, so the cuts are not typically painful—many people describe the sensation as light pinpricks or barely noticeable. The use of these sterile tools is crucial for both hygiene and comfort during the procedure.
